Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)

What are they?

So what are black soldier flies?  You might recognize them by a different name; calciworm, nutrigrub, phoenis worms, etc.  Scientific name: Hermetia illucens, they are found commonly within the US and the entire western hemisphere, the larvae are super composters.  The adults look like small black wasps, without a stinger or the ability to bite so they are completely harmless.

The larvae are quite fascinating.  They are able to consume 2x their own body weight on a daily basis.  They can process nearly any organic material into nutrients, including animal protein, citrus and even oils.  The larvae have many benefits that are just barely being tapped into.  Not only are they hyper efficient composters, they generate an organic peptide that has potent antimicrobial properties with a lower tendency to induce resistance in microbes.  They can even neutralize the dreaded E. Coli.  This is particularly beneficial in livestock farming.

The larvae have a fantastic nutrition profile on their own, with naturally occurring high levels of protein, up to 50% crude. This is significantly higher than traditional animal-based proteins like beef or chicken, which typically contain 20-30% per 100 grams.  They are high in fat, but the good kind!  Their fat is high in lauric acid, which is similar to what you would find in substances like coconut oil.  They also contain a similar amino acid profile to that of fishmeal, with a balanced ratio of lysine and methionine, which is essential for proper protein synthesis.

The larvae are super sustainable as they can be grown on organic waste, which helps reduce the amount of manure in livestock farming.  They are able to reduce green house gas emissions as well, BSF larvae store carbon and nitrogen from organic waste in their biomass. In one study, BSF larvae reduced the amount of carbon and nitrogen converted into greenhouse gases by 62% for carbon dioxide, 87% for methane, and 95% for nitrous oxide.  BSF technology can be used to treat organic waste in a variety of settings, from small households to large industrial plants. BSF technology can also produce high-quality products like protein, insect oil, and biofuel.

Now the best part and what I am currently doing with them.  BSF larvae are naturally very high in bioavailable calcium, as well as containing a great balance of proteins and fats.  They are one of the best feeder insects currently available for reptiles.  I am excited to announce I am now able to provide shipped BSFL for pet consumption!

These are my staple feeder here at Green Mountain Serpents and provide a super nutritious, easily digestible protein source.  Now that doesn't mean these are the sole live food, I provide a variety still to provide the broadest spectrum of nutrients.  If you do get BSFL and they start to turn black, do not throw them away.  They are pupating into the adult flies.  These slow moving insects are a delightful enrichment for your beardie, that they also happen to relish!  Reach out with any questions.
